Maybe Women Should Be More Difficult

Why being clear, vocal, and protective of your boundaries is not a character flaw.

Women are often taught to be agreeable before they are taught to be honest.

Be polite. Avoid conflict. Give people another chance. Above all, never become the woman someone might call “difficult.”

But what if being difficult is not always a bad thing?

In a recent video, creator Liv Yun argues that women may need to become a little more difficult. Not cruel or confrontational. Simply harder to pressure, dismiss, or take advantage of. As the video shared by FIERCE by mitú puts it, “Being difficult usually means just having real boundaries.”

A woman may be called difficult because she says no without inventing an excuse. Because she asks to be paid fairly. Because she questions something that does not feel right. Or because she admits that a relationship, friendship, or workplace dynamic no longer works for her.

None of those things make her unreasonable. They make her clear.

The Pressure to Be Palatable

Many women learn to soften their words, apologize before asking questions, and overexplain decisions that should not require a defense. Sometimes we ignore our own discomfort to keep someone else comfortable.

But being endlessly agreeable does not guarantee respect. It can teach people that our time, energy, and needs are negotiable. When we finally establish a limit, the people who benefited from our silence may suddenly call us selfish or difficult.

Or perhaps we simply stopped being convenient.

Boundaries Are Not Punishments

There is a difference between having boundaries and refusing all compromise.

A healthy boundary explains what you will accept and how you will respond. It does not exist to control someone else. You can be firm and still be compassionate. You can listen to another perspective without abandoning your own.

Being difficult should not mean becoming cold. It should mean becoming harder to disrespect.

Not everyone will understand your boundaries. Some people may only appreciate the version of you who rarely challenged them. That does not mean you are doing something wrong.

The next time someone calls you difficult, pause before accepting it as an insult.

You might simply be a woman who knows where she ends—and where everyone else begins.
